Palos Park, IL

Palos Park is only 40 minutes from museums, attractions & fine dining of downtown Chicago. Many Palos area homes are nestled against a pristine forest preserve that covers three sides of town. The north side of Palos Park is part of a 10,700 acre region of rolling woods & natural prairie, making it an incredibly scenic place to call home. Zoning has allowed the village to help maintain natural surroundings of creeks, ravines and tree-lined streets. The lot sizes are typically 1 or more acres. You’ll find convenient access to highways I-294, I-355, I-55 and local thoroughfares like Harlem Ave. (Rt. 43), LaGrange Rd. (Rt. 45), Southwest Hwy (123rd Street/McCarthy Rd.) and local commuter train service to the Loop.

Unique attractions like the famous Plush Horse Ice Cream Parlor and The McCord House Gallery & Cultural Center have made Palos Park a popular and charming place to live. Residents enjoy year-round activities such as horseback riding, cross-country skiiing and fishing/boating at Tampier Lake or Saganashkee Slough.

Palos Heights, IL
Palos Heights is a quiet, modern community in a rural setting. Lot sizes are typically 1/3 or 1/4 acres, most wooded. Palos Heights is officially a U.S. "Tree City." The heart of the village follows Harlem Avenue. Many residential properties are within walking distance of this corridor. The local Park District has six lovely parks, one that includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The Lake Katherine, Frank Passarelli Nature Center and Botanic Garden area has unique display gardens, a peaceful 20-acre man-made lake, waterfalls and a wide variety of plantlife, amphibians, reptiles, water birds, fish and mammals such as beavers and muskrats. In salute of the local Irish community, the waterfalls are even dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day.

The 16-mile Calumet-Saganashkee Channel (Cal-Sag 1922) runs north of Lake Katherine. It connects the Little Calumet River to the Chicago Ship Canal. It was dug to change the flow of the Calumet Rivers and divert waste away from Lake Michigan. It has also provided nearby homes with a beneficial storm water filtering/aerating/runoff system.

Fun factoid: The huge holiday Christmas Tree (blue spruce) in Chicago's Daily Plaza fall/winter 2008 was from Palos Heights?

Palos Hills, IL
Palos Hills is located 16 miles southwest of Chicago’s Loop. On the northwest side of Palos Hills you’ll find 7,000 acres of Cook County Forest Preserve and the densely timbered Mount Forest Island (east of Valparaiso Moraine). Prior archeological expeditions in Palos Hills uncovered traces of two primary Indian settlements prior to 1832. The Illinois & Michigan Canal was completed in 1848 and it provided new transportation options and brought many immigrants to the area. It also provided a means to deliver the grown agricultural products and timber logs into Chicago. The Village of Palos Hills was officially established in 1914 and was an agricultural community until the 1940s.

Palos has quick access to the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) and I-294. Metra train service to downtown can be found in nearby Worth, Illinois. It’s a convenient commute to downtown Chicago. Residents enjoy its many scenic parks, two golf courses and lush, forested area.
